Aging cause certain changes in the face and the body that we all have to be aware. But what is really happening on at the skin and cellular level?
In the epidermis or uppermost layer, as we age there is a decrease in the dermal papillae which connect the epidermis to the dermis. This gives aged skin a looser appearance as compared to young skin. The mitotic activity of the basal level diminishes and cell regeneration and replacement slows in the keratinocytes. This causes skin to have a dryer and scaly appearance.
The dermis which is the next layer down becomes thinner with age. In older people it can become up to 20% thinner. Collagen production slows by 1 to 2% per year after the age of 40 and skin fibers become more intermixed and thicker. Flexibility is lost and the skin becomes more transparent. Elastin fibers are reduced, fibroblasts are reduced and microvessels are decreased with age while larger visible vessels and facial telangectasias are increased.
The Subcutaneous tissue or fatty layer below our skin also thins. Thus support is lost to the overlying skin and the plumpness of youth is replaced. This fat loss isn’t generalized over our bodies but rather selective to the skin on our face, back of our hands and the soles of our feet. Women also notice this fat loss on their neck and through the décolletage.
Deeper still is our facial bones. Yes even these change especially as women become peri-menopausal. Osteopenia and osteoporosis occur in all bones of the body including our facial bone. As our facial bones shrink more support for our facial structures is lost. It is estimated that after 40 we loose approximately 5cc or one teaspoon of facial volume per year!
