Oily skin is difficult whatever your age. In this type of skin, the oil producing sebaceous glands are overactive and produce more oil than is needed. The oil gives the skin a greasy shine. The pores are enlarged and the skin often looks coarse or orange peeled. This type of skin condition still requires moisture and protection.
So many products just seem to aggravate the base condition Heredity, diet, hormone levels and weather can aggravate or improve the condition of oily skin. Because of the hormonal shifts of adolescence, oily skin is common in teenagers, but it can occur at any age. In general, skin tends to become dryer with age. The flow of sebum or oil increases during adolescence and starts decreasing with age. During pregnancy and menopause, hormonal imbalances can also upset the oil balance and increase the activity of sebaceous glands.
Many people have skin that is oily only in certain areas and dry or normal in others, a condition known as combination skin.
Skin Care for Oily Skin:
The great advantage of oily skin is that it ages at a slower rate than other skin types. Oily skin needs special cleansing with effective yet gentle products. Avoid harsh products or products that contain alcohol that strip your skin of oil and encourage flakiness. They can cause a reaction known as reactive seborrhoea, where the oil glands work overtime to compensate for the loss of natural oils.
If your skin is extremely oily, little or no moisturizing may be necessary before you are 30 years old. After that point, the skin around your eyes and mouth and on your throat may benefit from a nightly moisturizing, plus a mere touch of moisturizer in the morning.
For a cleanser try La Roche-Posay foaming gel cleanser or if you are experiencing breakouts try La RochePosay Effaclar Deep Purifying Cleanser. My absolute favorite would have to be Avene Diacneal which is included with Avene Diacneal Treatment for free. You can't beat that combination. Diacneal Cleanser contains glycolic acid which really keeps your skin and pore size refined. Yes you still need to be on a retinaldehyde or tretinoin when you have oily skin. Use this at least a few times a week as it will cut down on breakouts and help with skin cell turnover.
Finally Jan Marini’s C-Esta facial cleanser is excellent for oily skin. Don’t forget your toner with oily skin. This actually cleans off any remaining residue and ph balances your skin. Try La Roche-Posay Effaclar Toner.
Along with oily skin comes enlarged pores. Jan Marini Bioclear Lotion is a combination of salicylic acid and glycolic acid that really seems to work. Salicylic acid is one of the best treatments with oily skin to prevent breakouts and clean out pores thereby making them appear smaller. Salicylic acid is the only acid that actually exfoliates inside the pores.
I also like Jan Marini Oil Control Serum. After 30, a hydrator instead of a moisturizer. A true moisturizer contains oil to keep moisture in whereas a hydrator adds water to the skin. Any hydrator with hyaluronic acid is appropriate. I love the Hyalogy line for this because of the high percentage of active ingredient combined with the nanosome technology which allows the molecules to truly penetrate and therefore be most effective.
I believe masks should be part of any total beauty regime. One half hour period a week is not too much to dedicate to your skin for it to look its best. Try Jan Marini’s C Esta Mask once or twice a week. Don’t forget to use your antioxidants. Your skin still need s to be protected from environmental damage. Use Obagi C Serum because it is very light, or SkinMedica Vitamin C cream. I would also include Prevage for its idebenone content.
Finally use a light but effective sunblock. Anthelios is effective and acts as a moisturizer but I still favor the Journee by Neocutis. This contains growth factor and comes in the color of skin tone.
